From living trees to firewood logs

All of the firewood we produce comes from tree surgery work that we are contracted to undertake for our clients. We do not simply go out and harvest trees just to turn into firewood, but we recycle the timber into a usable by-product of firewood logs. Some of the trees we are asked to cut down are damaged or dangerous and have to be removed. Others have outgrown their space in a small garden or have reached the end of their life and are needing to be replaced.

Once cut down, the timber is cut to lengths and then gets stacked on pallets in our wood yard to season for one year. The timber lengths get cut and split into finished log sizes and are stored in our log barn for another year until they are delivered to our customers. We do not need to force dry the logs in a kiln as we use the time-honoured tradition of air drying the timber.  By allowing two years for the logs to naturally season to an acceptable moisture level, we can produce firewood that has as low a carbon footprint as possible.

Once a delivery is requested, the logs get hand-picked and loaded up to be delivered to a customer. This sustainable cycle is ongoing, and we are continually laying up new lengths of timber in the yard to start the seasoning process once again.
